Distractions from Blogging

I've been too busy to blog much lately, although I've got plenty of exciting things to write about that are just piling up higher and deeper. My chief distraction is all the time spent in the field playing with Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens). What a terribly photogenic species:

Like these photos? I've got a million of them.

My other big distraction is another push towards finishing some of my genetic research. Along those lines, I was just cited for the first time! Okay, so it was for my 'in prep' manuscript and not in a publication, but still... to see for yourself, check out the Gray-crowned Palm-Tanager (Phaenicophilus poliocephalus) account on Neotropical Birds.

  1. Love the scrub-jays! And congrats on the cite on Neotropical Birds, very cool. I haven't spent nearly enough time perusing the accounts that are there already - so many things to do, so little time. I need a rainy day.

Looks like the research is treating you well, looking forward to eventual posts!

  2. Brilliant creatures =)
Question: do you have any advice for birding/herping/butterflying southern FL for the endemics? We'll be in Boca Grande for a week in late July and hopefully try to get to the Keys as well, with all the "usual" FL target birds. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  5. heidi - I don't have any advice for southern Florida, because I haven't really been able to get off the station much! That should change next week, I'm planning a brief getaway in the direction of the glades. If you want to know where to find any of the hundreds of Florida Scrub-Jays on Archbold Station, I can help you...

  6. From the sounds of it, Osprey State Park will get us our Scrubbies, but I'll hold off on more questions until you get back from your next set of adventures =)

  7. Is there a previous post that discusses scrub jays? I'd like to know more about their preferred habitat, forage likes, range, and nesting sites.

First time I've encountered blog, and I really, really like it.

  8. Thanks! I haven't written anything specifically on Scrub-Jays yet but I have a few ideas for posts. We'll see when I can get them written.
